Mrs. Sammie (Davenport) Higgins, 100, a native and lifelong resident of Cannon County died December 14, 2012. She was born on July 15, 1912. She was the daughter of the late Sam and Ida (Richards) Davenport. Also preceding her in death are her husband, Jessie Higgins; daughter, Jean Bise; granddaughter, Pamela Jenice Maxwell; siblings, Lawrence, Ray, Bertha and Elizabeth Davenport, Bessie Mingle, Effie Gribble and Ruby Bragg. Mrs. Higgins was a member of the Woodbury Church of Christ, homemaker and retired food service worker for the Woodbury School System. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and loving aunt. She had a quiet strength and dignity and will be missed and never forgotten by those whose lives she touched. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Don Alexander; daughter, Margaret Faye Ryan all of Murfreesboro; grandchildren, Donna Miller, Rhonda Chandler, David Hayes and Daryl Alexander; eight great grandchildren; one great great grandchild and sister-in-law, Lou Davis Higgins. Visitation will be held at Smith Funeral Home on Monday, December 17, 2012 from 4-8 PM. Graveside services will be Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at 2 PM in Riverside Cemetery. Herb Alsup and Carl Witty will officiate. Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers. Her family is especially grateful to the staff of Woodbury Nursing Center for their care and kindness during her residence there.
