Donald "Don" Gannon

Mr. Donald "Don" Gannon, 76, of Woodbury died September 15, 2013. He was born on March 17, 1937 in the Rush Creek Community of Cannon County. His parents were the late John George Gannon and Willie Pearl (Young) Gannon. He was also preceded in death by his wife Mazle Gannon; brother, Virgil Gannon and sisters, Alta Mae Gannon and Eva Virginia Gannon. He is survived by his sons, Randy(Julie) Gannon and Ronald(Karen) Gannon both of Woodbury; daughter, Tara(Eddie) Hinson of South Carolina; sister, Elizabeth Simpson of Bradyville; eight grandchildren, Drew Gannon, Hayley Gannon, Katie Gannon, Wyatt Gannon, Amelia Gannon, Trey Hinson; two step-grandchildren, Michael Reed and Jenny Reed; uncles, Virgil & Grace Young and Nile & Della Young both of Woodbury; aunt, Mary Brown Hale of Dearborn, MI and special friend, Ruth Lefevers of Murfreesboro. Mr. Gannon was a member of the Elkins Church of Christ. He was a truck driver for many years, first driving for Tilford Lumber and later retiring from Service Transport. He also served as a deputy for the Cannon County Sheriff's Department, under his brother-in-law, Sheriff Robert Simpson. Dirt track racing was one of his favorite things to do. He and his son Randy spent many Saturday nights at the track. Watching stock car races on Sunday was a pastime for him too. Cannon County history and families were his passion. He spent many hours visiting and collecting photos and history of the county. He wrote and published a book called "Creek Folks" about the families of the Hollis Creek Community. Making people laugh was how many people will remember him. Visitation will be held at Smith Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 from 3-9 PM. Funeral services will be Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at 3 PM in the Smith Funeral Home chapel. Joey Ferrell will officiate. Interment will be in Riverside Gardens.
