Mr. Kenneth Gray Gassaway, 88, of Gassaway died on October 25, 2013. He was born in the Sycamore Community on October 23, 1925. His parents were the late Walter Gassaway and Dessie Brown (Higgins) Gassaway. He is also preceded in death by two brothers, Robert White Gassaway and Tom Gassaway. He is survived by three sons, Albert "Al" Gray Gassaway of Cumberland City, Bobby Gassaway of Lebanon and Kenneth Louis "Ken" & Laura Gassaway of Portland; daughters, Charlene Eve Shapiro of Lebanon, Mary Brown Gassaway of Florida and Bobbette Louise Gassaway of Nebraska; one brother, Earl Gassaway of Smithville; two sisters, Winnie Evelyn Worley of New Jersey and Leatrice Brewington of Nashville; eighteen grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. Mr. Gassaway grew up on Blair Branch Road as a young man. He lived in the Gassaway Community for his entire life. Growing up in the Great Depression Era he lived a simple life. He was a strong willed man who loved the hills of Cannon County. The Chumbley family was very special to him and helped to raise him. Hal B. and Donald Chumbley were like brothers. He enjoyed coon hunting with friends like, Rooster Cook and Ellis Ferrell. He worked as a farmer and loved to spend time with his grandchildren. The friends in the Gassaway Community and the Gassaway Church of Christ helped him with anything he needed. Smith Funeral Home will conduct graveside services at the Beech Hill Cemetery, October 28, 2013 at 3 PM. Tim Gentry will officiate. Smith Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
