Mable Reed Helton

Ms. Mable Helton, passed away on October 1, 2016 after an extended illness. She was born in the Braxton Community of Woodbury on October 25, 1923. She was preceded in death by her parents, James P. Reed and Ora Paschal Reed Davenport. Also preceding her in death were her infant son, Harold Ewing Helton; sisters, Nannie Mai Knox and Minnie Bell McAnally; brother, Elam Reed; and a foster brother, Charlie Elmer Richardson. She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Hix of Lafayette, TN; granddaughter, Tonya (Chris) Fryman; special friends, Charles and Annette Thomason and George Brimm. Ms. Helton was born in the heart of the Braxton Community of Cannon County. It had a post office and bank until a tornado destroyed them in the early 1900’s. She graduated from Woodbury Central High. She worked for Colonial Shirt Factory for over 30 years in the office. Many people knew her for her great sense of humor and her love for genealogy of the Reed and Paschal families. She was once the focus of a MTSU student’s thesis paper. The interview she conducted is still on file in their archives. She loved music and could play guitar. She taught her nephew to play and she later gave him the guitar which he had restored. One of her favorite songs was “You are my sunshine”. She taught it to her daughter and many others in the family. Some of her other interests included sewing, quilting, and solving word puzzles. She was a member of the Curlee Church of Christ. Visitation will be held at Smith Funeral Home on Monday, October 3, 2016 from 4-8 pm. Funeral services will be Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at 1 pm. Mark Barker will officiate. Interment will be in Thyatira Cemetery. Due to her extended illness the family requests memorial donations in lieu of flowers to assist with funeral expenses.
