Mrs. Harriet Houston Hough, was born in Memphis, Tennessee on August 15, 1939 to Frances Martin and George McKnight Houston.
She graduated from The Hutchinson School in 1957, where she was crowned May Queen in her senior year. While attending Hollins College in Roanoke, Virginia, she met her future husband, Royce Hough, who was a student at nearby Washington & Lee University. In 1958, she was named Dream Girl of Pi Kappa Alpha for the State of Virginia and, a year later, she and Royce were married. They recently celebrated the 58th anniversary of their happy and loving marriage. They lived most of their lives together in Winston-Salem, having spent 10 interim years in Jacksonville, FL and Roanoke, VA.
She was an avid reader. Her interests covered a wide range of subjects, and she always loved exploring and learning new things. She was an astute student of life and love and had a particular interest in studying comparative religions. She was dedicated to understanding the progress of Spirit as expressed and practiced throughout varying theologies. Harriet was also an accomplished seashell collector, compiling an extensive collection of shells from the Southeast to the Caribbean. She was twice awarded the Delaware Museum DuPont Trophy for the outstanding mollusk exhibit at the Jacksonville Shell Show. She greatly enjoyed travelling in search of both seashells and new experiences and had especially happy memories of climbing the Great Pyramid at Giza in Egypt and the Pyramid of the Sun in Mexico City. For most of her life, Harriet's favorite roles were, above all else, Wife, Mother and Grandmother. Her family was always her greatest joy.
She is survived by three sons who are great friends: Michael (Amy Dillon), Ben (Ann Forehand) and Mark (David Roberts). She has been known for years as "Lucky" by her grandchildren, friends and family as this is how she felt when she became a grandmother to her six grandchildren: Houston, Georgiana, Henry, Liza, George, and Mariella. Harriet was predeceased by her parents and her sister, Sydney Houston Hall (Mrs. Wallace L. Hall). Her surviving nephews and niece, Houston, Wallace and Sydney Ann Hall, along with their ten children, live in Dallas, Texas.
